Five Element Acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient healing art and part of a larger system known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It uses finger pressure to stimulate key points lying on the surface of the body. Through applying pressure to these points, muscular tension is released and the circulation of blood and vital subtle energy (or Chi - pronounced Chee) is promoted, assisting the body's natural healing abilities.

Acupressure uses the same points as Acupuncture, but without the insertion of needles. It can be used alone or combined with other treatments, like Massage, Myofascial Release, Reiki and other types of bodywork. It is safe, effective and has no adverse side effects and - is suitable for everyone.

The acupressure points are found along channels or meridians of which there are 12 main ones found in our bodies. Subtle energy or Chi is circulated throughout the body through these meridians, much like the blood is circulated throughout the body via veins and arteries.

To help you understand the concept of Chi and the meridians, think of a meridian as a river bed, over which water flows and irrigates the land; feeding, nourishing and sustaining the substance through which it flows.

If a dam was to be erected at any point along the river, the nourishing effect the water had on the whole river would stop at the point the dam was placed.

Similarly, when Chi is blocked, the rest of the body previously being nourished by the continual flow, now suffers, resulting in illness and disease.

As a Therapist, my role is to facilitate the restoration of a healthy, harmonising flow of energy to the body, so it can heal itself and return to a state of balance and health.

What is Five Element Acupressure?

The Five elements (Fire, Earth, Metal, Wood and Water) are the different qualities of Chi energy which are found within the universe. They also have their own characteristics that correspond to the energies of an individual.

Understanding the relationships of the elements in an individual provide clues for diagnosis and ultimately provide a platform for me, as a therapist, to facilitate the body's natural healing process.

Our emotional and physical well being is governed by external influences, but also by the forces of nature depending on whether or not the elements are in balance.

Each element is associated with a meridian or organ function in the body as well as being responsible for affecting our emotions.

Treating the body holistically means all aspects of the body are taken into account when working towards a diagnosis.

If you are after a holistic treatment where you are treated as an individual and not just a health condition - why not give acupressure a try, either alone or in combination with another treatment?

How can Acupressure help me?

Stimulating Acupressure points:

  • Releases endorphins (the body's natural pain killers) to help block pain

  • Increases blood and oxygen flow , relaxing muscle tension

  • Balances the flow of Chi (subtle energy) along the Meridians (energy channels) to restore balance and improve health and well-being

  • Has a positive effect on the immune system

  • Has a natural calming effect on the nervous system, reducing stress related illnesses.

  • Can relieve pain locally or in a part of the body that is distant from the point being stimulated.

  • Can help relieve symptoms of various health conditions that are related to the characteristics of the meridian on which it lies.

What to expect from an Acupressure treatment session?

Upon arrival you will be asked to fill out a Health History form and then we will discuss your current health conditions and reason for your visit.

I may ask various questions to help me determine an appropriate treatment session for you. You will remain fully clothed throughout the session (unless you are combining acupressure with a massage) and soft music will be playing to enhance relaxation.

To achieve movement of Chi (subtle energy) throughout the body and ultimately return the body to a state of balance, pressure is sustained for at least 3-5 minutes on each point. Sometimes two points will be worked on at the same time.

At the conclusion of the session there will be time for a chat about how it went from both our points of view.

Acupressure may be sought after simply for relief from painful or uncomfortable symptoms of illness/disease or muscular dysfunction, such as sore neck and shoulders or irritating digestive problems, where a few sessions may be all that is needed.

However, it is often sought after to discover the cause of the illness or disease as opposed to simply treating the symptoms. This outcome often takes much longer, consisting of many regular sessions, but is highly rewarding as better health is discovered throughout the journey.

As with all alternative therapies, regular monthly sessions is a great way to maintain balance in your body, reduce chance of muscle injury and worsening of current conditions and to soothe the nervous system, which is so essential in reducing stress which seems to infiltrate our lives no matter how hard we try to deter it.

Just as we give our cars a 'tune up' to maintain and improve performance, our bodies also require regular 'tune up's' to prevent illness and disease and to maintain balance so we can live our lives to the full ....... after all ......
                             We all deserve better health.
